The 316 grade is a standard molybdenum-containing grade, and its total output is second only to the 304 grade among austenitic stainless steels. Molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistance than the 304 grade, particularly greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
Grade 316L is a lower carbon version of 316 and has very high resistance to sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). It is widely used in the oil, gas and chemical industries due to its cost-effective corrosion resistance and ease of manufacturing. There is generally no significant price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even at low temperatures. Compared with chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel, 316L stainless steel has higher creep resistance, fracture stress and tensile strength at high temperatures.
